German filmmaker Fritz Lang's silent sci-fi masterpiece METROPOLIS premiered in 1927 at an epic length of 153 minutes -- but was an initial box-office failure, and instantly trimmed drastically to almost half its intended length. Much of the excised footage was considered lost forever, but a 2008 discovery in Buenos Aires has resulted in a newly restored version -- with 25 minutes of footage unseen for over 80 years!

The 2010 restoration of the silent classic is one of the most exciting film preservation achievements ever attempted. The full 25 minutes of heretofore lost footage was painstakingly restored to produce the 148 minute version of the film that has been mesmerizing audiences worldwide since its completion. As if that's not enough, a new score incorporating the newly-restored footage has been composed by Boston's Alloy Orchestra, "the best in the world at accompanying silent film," according to critic Roger Ebert. Alloy Orchestra will perform their score live at this rare cinematic event.
